MECHA’S Posada

15 Dec

Sacred Heart Catholic ChurchMECHA is organizing a Posada for the public. A posada is basically a large gathering which our Latin culture has raised us to become used to. Christmas time in the Latin culture is incorporated with a lot of visits to church. Because most of the Latino community is catholic we celebrate and thank Dios and La Virgen Maria otherwise known as God and the Virgen Marie, for blessing us with life.

Ever since I can remember I have been attending Posadas. Many different places hold wat we call Posadas, such as Church’s, Family members, and community groups such as MECHA. This year MECHA is hosting a Posada open to the public in Downtown San Jose. We have various restaurant donating food, as well as department stores supplying us with equipment we need for the event.

In a Posada there are a lot of traditional events that occur. One of the traditional event is having the people in the posada separating into two different groups. There is one group which we ask them to go outside of the main door and knock. The group inside must answer however in song. The tradition of this is the two groups are singing two different lyrics. The lyrics consist of the story of Posada. This is what we do to start the Posada. Another one of the main events is organizing a play/skit of when baby Jesus was born. Other traditional things are breaking the Pinata,  and having children pray together out loud to the people in the Posada.

Throughout the rest of the evening Posadas consist of people dancing Ballet Forkloriko, this is a traditional mexican folk dance, as well as groups of choir singing traditional christmas songs in spanish. The MECHA group of SJSU has decided to host this event for free, and will be feeding a full meal consisting of rice, beans, and birria.
